Philippine Ambassador to The Netherlands J. Eduardo Malaya was elected to the Executive Council of the Asian Society of International Law (AsianSIL) for the term 2021 to 2023 during the Society’s General Assembly meeting held on 17 August.
“Through the AsianSIL, we hope to contribute to the articulation of the Asian voice in the progressive development of international law,” Malaya said.
The AsianSIL is an organization of scholars and practitioners of Public and Private International law in the region. It was established in 2007 in Singapore.
Elected with Ambassador Malaya as Members of the Executive Council are Law Professor Elizabeth Aguiling-Pangalangan and former International Criminal Court Judge Raul Pangalangan. Prof. Elizabeth Pangalangan and Ambassador Malaya are President and Vice President, respectively, of the Philippine Society of International Law (PSIL).
Malaya was formerly Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs (August 2019 to March 2021), Assistant Secretary for Treaties and Legal Affairs (2017–2019), and Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia (2011-2017).
A Member of the Board of Editorial Consultants of the Philippine Yearbook of International Law, he is the author, co-author or editor of nine books on international law, diplomacy and history, notably “Philippine Treaties in Force 2020”; “Stewards of the Nation: Aguinaldo to Duterte and their Inaugural Visions” (2018); “Forging Partnerships: Philippine Defense Cooperation in Constitutional and International Laws” (2017); and “Frontlines of Diplomacy: Conversations with Philippine Ambassadors” (2011).
The major activities of the AsianSIL are the publication of the Asian Journal of International Law, and the conduct of the Society’s biennial conferences. PSIL hosted the 7th Biennial Conference of the AsianSIL in August 2019 in Quezon City, which was co-sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs. The 9th Biennial Conference will be held in Bandung, Indonesia, in 2023.
