The Philippine Embassy in the Hague hosted, in partnership with a number of FIlipino-Dutch community organizations, the first-ever Simbang Gabi (Night Masses) and Parol (Lantern) Festival at the Embassy's Kalayaan Hall on 19 to 21 December 2022.
The masses and the display of the parol are the Embassy's way of spreading the blessings and joys of the Yuletide season to the members of the FIlipino Dutch community.

The first mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Sjaak de Boer and led by Filipinos from the Church of our Christ Savior. In the homily, Fr. de Boer underscored the importance of “reason, emotion and action” for faith to happen.

Ronald and Terry Gavino of Manila Trading and Hazel van der Winden of Hazel’s Cusina generously provided food for the salu-salo (fellowship) after the mass.

Meanwhile, Rev. Fr. Alan de Guzman celebrated the second mass who said in his homily that “by saying yes to God, we allow Him to be with us wherever we go and whatever we do.”

The mass was co-organized by the Tulong Kabayan Netherlands, SARO Community Foundation, Filipino Migrants in Solidarity (FILMIS), and MCVO-Media Correspondent Volunteers Organization Inc., which also provided the refreshments.

The mass on 21 December was celebrated by Fr. Gilbert Razon who reminded the attendees that the “true meaning of Christmas is receiving Jesus.” Co-organizer of this mass was the Filipino Catholic Community in Dordrecht.

Consuls Jarie Osias, Nomer B. Ado II, and Kay Kalaw-Ado, on three separate occasions, delivered welcome remarks on behalf of Ambassador J. Eduardo Malaya and the Embassy.

Simbang gabi is a Filipino Catholic tradition held for nine consecutive days from 16 December to the eve of Christmas. Many conduct the masses at dawn but there are those who hold it at night. It is an important part of how Catholic Filipinos celebrate the Yuletide season and signify their devotion and belief in the meaningful birth of Christ.

Parol, on the other hand, is a Filipino Christmas adornment, in the shape of a star of many colors and sizes, usually displayed on windows and doors during the holiday season. It symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem that guided the three Magis to Infant Jesus’ manger. In the past, FIlipinos would use the parol to light their paths to the churches to attend the Simbang Gabi. It has since become a symbol of light and hope which Christmas brings.

The Embassy and all partner organizations wish to thank the members of the Filipino-Dutch Community who supported this Christmas activity and wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. // END
