A lively session with young, smart and savvy Filipino lawyers was conducted by the Embassy on 16 January at the sidelines of their three-week Winter Course on Public International Law at the Hague Academy of International Law, which runs from 9 to 27 January. This is the third batch of Filipino lawyers who have participated in the program since 2021.
Ambassador J. Eduardo Malaya gave a briefing on the work and initiatives of the Embassy vis-a-vis the legal international organizations based in The Hague, notably the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Hague Conference on Private International Law, and the Hague Academy, as well as the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. “We encourage you to deepen your interest and expertise in international law, particularly in critical fields such as the law of the sea, environmental law and climate change.”
Legal Officer Marisar Ivy Cabatingan also introduced the other functions of the Embassy, notably on matters relating to the political, economic, consular and cultural affairs between the Philippines and The Netherlands.
The participants of the Hague Academy are immersed in lectures and seminars on a broad range of topics in international law conducted by prominent legal practitioners and scholars, including Judges of the International Court of Justice. The Hague Academy typically gathers some 350 participants from 97 different nationalities for its courses.
“The briefing conducted by the Embassy was like an additional module of our program, this time international law from a Philippine perspective,” one participant said.
