The public art works of Filipino artists Louie Cordero and Mark Salvatus are among the features of Sonsbeek 2016: transaction, an international contemporary art exhibition, which was officially opened on 03 June 2016 by H.M. King Willem Alexander of the Kingdom of the Netherlands at the Park Sonsbeek in Arnhem.  The Sonsbeek art exhibition was first held in 1949 with the aim of bringing art closer to the people.

Mr. Louie Cordero’s artwork “The Happy Camper” was highlighted during the opening ceremony.  His work is a two-meter tall, three-dimensional head made out of foam and fiberglass.  Visitors are encouraged to take an active role in completing the artwork by making use of gum and clay to cover that part of the head without skin.   Also on display were Mr. Cordero’s colorful and irregularly-shaped ping-pong tables promoting both interaction and awareness of social issues.

The artworks of Mr. Mark Salvatus entitled “Claws” in the meantime are featured at Coehoorn Park in Arnhem City.  Mr. Salvatus was inspired by his mother’s efforts to spare the furniture from scratching by pets.  Using books to wrap table and chair legs, “Claws” provides a playful yet profound setting for interaction between people and their cats.
